The idea for the painting was inspired by the “Moriskendansers” statue by Walter De Buck. My first encounter with Moriskendansers was four years ago on a cold night in Ghent. My initial impression of the statue was its dark and violent atmosphere.
However, after conducting some brief research and observing it again, I had an entirely opposite impression. These conflicting visions caught my attention and motivated me to create a piece that could be interpreted from different perspectives.
Ghent is a city full of historical places, with many statues and gargoyles adorning buildings and hidden corners. These gargoyles are believed to keep places safe from demonic energies.
I think that depending on our actions, we sometimes develop a sort of defensive attitude to protect ourselves or our societal positions. This could stem from feeling important and self-centered.
Whatever the reason, it reminds me of gargoyles or a defensive mechanism that looks dark or ugly. While designing these posters, I imagined a sound or a voice that transforms into a vortex, absorbing these negative aspects of ourselves and leaving behind unity and togetherness.
What I love about music and dancing is that they allow us to communicate without words, simply vibing together. Enjoying music comes purely from within, and dancing together represents the freedom of our souls. It’s important to protect this sense of unity.
On the other hand, simply enjoying music or a moment can be a struggle for some people. When I think about Trefpunt, I imagine a free state and environment where everything related to music and culture comes together.
Inspired by Van Eyck’s “Lamb of God,” I designed this painting in a triptych format to depict a night scene, showing people and gargoyles in each other’s positions in society. In the left panel, I wanted to illustrate the seductive nature of sound at the beginning of all sins, symbolized by the act of eating an apple.
